Ant Control

Black Ants live in soil and usually construct nests in gardens, beneath paving stones, in buildings and their foundations. Each nest is typically inhabited by a single queen. The workers of these species are highly active, constantly foraging for a diverse range of food sources, such as sweet substances, honeydew, seeds and insects. Every year, the queen ant whilst young will leave their nests as "flying ants" to establish new colonies, while the nests themselves can endure for several years. The "flying ants" may leave in large numbers close to or inside houses, causing annoyance to humans, however are not a threat to health.

Only when Black Ants become a significant nuisance within a building is it necessary to take action. It is recommended to seal off any entry points using sealants to prevent their access. There are various options available for killing or deterring the entry of ants, such as residual sprays, dusts, or aerosols. A lot of sprays prove to only be a short-term solution to the pests, however Bendiocarb has proven to be particularly effective in dealing with ants. Some of these products are approved for use by the general public. Another option is using a slow-acting poison bait formulation, specifically sodium tetraborate, which is readily available.

Pharaoh's Ant (Monomorium Pharaonis)

These small and agile insects are native to tropical regions and can only be found in heated buildings in the UK. They construct large, seemingly disorganised nests in cavities and heating ducts. Each nest can have multiple queens and the workers can be observed being active throughout the day moving in clear paths between the nest and food sources. They forage on a variety of foods and require access to water.

Infestations are spread through a process known as "budding", where groups of workers and occasionally queens leave the main nest to create satellite colonies.

Pharaoh's Ants have the potential to transmit disease-causing organisms. They can contaminate both food and sterile materials, even penetrating packaging due to their small size. Their ability to navigate through ducts and building structures makes infestations highly pervasive. Moreover, satellite nests can easily be transported from one building to another, further exacerbating the problem.

Like with Black Ants, only when the Pharaoh's Ants become a significant nuisance within a building is it necessary to take action.

The only way to destroy an ants nest is to get professional help where food bait insecticide is used to kill the queen and destroy the colony.
